The Feder Family Hobby

Steve Feder’s number 45 modified has been a fixture at the Lernerville Speedway for the past seven seasons. When he takes to the track at the Sarver, PA oval on Friday nights he does so with his family watching him in the stands and when he returns to the pits his family is there to help him wrench on the car.

Feder’s family has been there to help out since the beginning and they continue to help out on the car today.

“My Dad, Mom, Brother, and Sister all help out on the car not only on race nights, but during the week in the shop too,” Feder said. “It’s a big family activity. It keeps us all together.”

Steve’s dad Harold, his mother June, his brother Matt, his sister Jennifer and Matt’s fiancee Liz all play a role on the team.

“My Brother, a buddy of mine and I put the motors together and my dad and mom help out with tires,” Feder said. “At the track my sister does the record keeping and does tire pressures and shocks. My brother’s fiancĂ©e does a lot of the social media work and my little nephews help out washing the car. My brother-in-law and cousin help out too.”

Feder first got into racing when he took to the track in a lawn mower at the former Shadetree Speedway in Butler, PA. He raced lawn mowers for two seasons (2004-05) and then moved into the modified ranks.

“My dad had worked on Tim Temple’s modified back in the day and he was still running a little bit so we started going to the races with him and then I met Dave Murdick who helped me start looking for a car to run,” Feder said. “Knowing people in that division kind of steered me in the direction of getting one."

Feder purchased a modified in the fall and worked on his car through the winter with help from Murdick. He made his debut in the spring of 2007 at Lernerville Speedway.

“I remember the first night it was my Dad, my brother and me,” Feder said. “None of us had much experience as far as working on the car and I had never really driven anything as far as a race car goes. The first night was really a whirlwind tour because there was so much to do that I almost didn't have time to get nervous.”

The rookie season was a solid one for Feder. He won Rookie of the year honors for both Lernerville and the BRP Modified Tour.

The team continued to gain on the learning curve with more experience, but there were bumps along the way.

“As we got faster we had some challenges and tore some equipment up," Feder said. “Sometimes though, when you learn some lessons the hard way you tend to remember them better.”

Those lessons started paying off for Feder and the 45 team late in the team’s second season and into the third year when the results starting coming from the work they had been putting in.

“We bought a car from Gary Risch that upgraded our equipment going in our second year,” Feder said. “When we got our first top ten it got us feeling that we were getting up to speed and going in the right direction. The fourth year is when we started running faster and even more competitive.”

The team continued to get faster and Feder purchased his first new car in 2011, a Bicknell chassis, but engine problems kept them from getting that car on the track for the season.  It did however make its debut in 2012 and it was fast right out of the gate.

“We were really in the hunt trying to get that first win all season,” Feder said. “We had a couple heartbreakers at Lernerville. We got passed on the last lap for the win after leading all the laps of the feature and things of that nature.”

The hunt for that first win came to an end on September 1, 2012 and in a big way. Feder was able to defeat a strong field of cars in the Russ King Memorial, a BRP Modified tour race at Sharon Speedway.

“I hadn’t been to Sharon much at all,” Feder said. “We started fourth in the race and the car took off and we went forward. It was definitely unexpected to get our first win. The whole family was there so that was an awesome experience. The Russ King Memorial is one of the highest paying races in our area so that was a great win to get let alone my first win.”

Feder backed up his first win by winning again at Sharon the next time the modifieds raced there a few weeks later.

“We started on the outside pole and led every lap,” Feder said. “I know sometimes that second win can elude people for a while so it was good to get that out of the way.”

Feder is coming off a season where he finished 6th in the Lernerville point standings and 12th in the BRP Modified point standings. A win at the famed Lernerville track has evaded the Butler, PA driver to this point, and it is something that he would like to cross off the list in 2014.

“That’s the goal this year,” Feder said. “We’re still chasing it there. It is the place I've turned the most laps and it is the home track. The competition is pretty steep there, but I think we can do it.”

Feder plans on racing at Lernerville weekly as well as running the BRP tour races when he can. They also plan on running at Sharon some too.

The 45 car will have Johnson’s Auto Service of Butler, PA, who has been with Feder since he started racing a modified, as a sponsor this year as well as Starr Graphics, who does all the wraps for the car, JNJ Sports Media, http://www.jnjmotorsportsmedia.com/, who does the wrap designs for the car, McLafferty Heating and Cooling, http://www.mclaffertyhvac.com/, who will be back for their second season on the car, and Steve’s Auto Body of Butler, PA who helps with painting the car and helps on the crew as well.

Feder plans on having his car at the Lernerville Clearview Mall car show on March 20-22 so you can check out his car there as well as many others that weekend.

This Week in DIRT; Kaeding Claims 2014 Classic Victory; Blankenship Dominates in El Paso;Tri City Speedway (PA) Announcement;

Just a few tidbits this week for all you diehard dirt fans currently in the middle of what we call "the deep slumber" of dirt season where the off season doldrums have taken hold. The NDRL finished up their "pre" season festivities with a three day party in a rather chilly El Paso Texas. Tim Kaeding will now have to have serious discussions with Australian customs officials involving why he's leaving the country with $30,000 stuffed into and falling out of his pockets. And locally, it appears that the rumors have teeth in the case of Tri City Speedway's coming back to life in 2014.

So, if you've been locked out of the house because your wife caught you with perfume on your clothes and $1,000 of credit card receipts from hotels she's never heard of. Or perhaps you've suffered a case of temporary amnesia and forgot all of your passwords only to discover that somebody found where you wrote them down and cleaned out your bank account, don't worry about it, we're here to help you catch back up on what happened in .....THIS WEEK IN DIRT

Kaeding Claims 2014 Classic Victory

California Native Tim Kaeding took home the prize and showed a packed house how to celebrate after winning the 2014 Sprint Car Classic!

from Tim Hodges at speedcafe.com.

Popular Californian Tim Kaeding won a memorable Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic at a sold-out Premier Speedway at Warrnambool.

But it’s what happened next which proved unforgettable in what will go down as one of the wildest celebrations in Australian motorsport history.

The American World of Outlaws star celebrated with a series of high speed donuts, which ended only after he flipped and wrecked his car to the delight of the massive crowd.

He emerged triumphant, jumping on top of his upside down, smouldering machine along the front straight.
“I thought l might flip over,” Kaeding said.
“But l didn’t expect to wreck that hard.
“Put it this way, l was going down the front straight still trying to find my bearings after the donuts down the back straight.”
“l blame Millsy (Premier Speedway’s General Manager David Mills) for encouraging me, l celebrated that a little too much.”

Kaeding’s vigorous celebrations capped off a spectacular 42nd edition of the Classic – the first to be contested over three nights.

Such was the popularity of the event, organisers had to take the unprecedented step of locking the gates at 5.30pm – more than an hour before the final night’s racing began.

Warrnambool’s Jamie Veal started from pole beside Kaeding in the prestigious $30,000 to win 40 lap final.

Veal got the jump and led the opening 6 laps, before Kaeding made the decisive move of the race, and from there was never headed on a race track that was unfortunately at its worst all weekend for the final.

The race was halted 31 laps in after a vicious rollover involving Knoxville Nationals legend Donny Schatz. He’d spent several laps locked in a brilliant duel with Daryn Pittman and Robbie Farr, before Schatz rode the right rear of Farr and was pitched upside down into the turn one concrete wall, destroying his Luch Monte-owned machine.

A visibly shaken Schatz hobbled from the wreck and said he was sore, but otherwise uninjured.
On resumption Kaeding continued to set a hot pace to take the victory and top off a stunning week for the likeable American – who finished second at Avalon on Wednesday, second at Mount Gambier on Thursday, before his Sunday night Classic success.

“It’s one of the most amazing weeks I’ve ever had,” Kaeding claimed.

“I hate to ruin Australia Day, but America’s got the gold tonight.”

Two Warrnambool racers – one a veteran, the other a rising star – completed a popular podium, with Max Dumesny second ahead of Jamie Veal.

Trevor Green was fourth ahead of Kerry Madsen, Luke Dillon, Jason Meyers, James McFadden, Matt Egel and Robbie Farr completed the top 10.

A record field of Americans now return to the States for the opening to the Outlaws campaign, while the Aussie contingent heads to Tasmania for next week’s Australian title.
With a three-day crowd just under 30,000, a record car count, and a popular US victor, the classic again stamped itself across the weekend as the ultimate prize in Australian sprint car racing.

Here's some video of Tim's Donuts. It's definitely worth checking out!

Blankenship Dominates in El Paso; Phillips Finally Snags Early Win

John the "COALMAN" Blankenship took some momentum from the last few races of the NDRL's winter extreme and translated it to instant success in El Paso, Texas this weekend in the three race "Battle At The Border".  Blankenship Took home close to $10,00 for the three nights, winning the Friday and Saturday portions while taking home a fourth place finish on Sunday.  The 2013 World 100 winner will focus on running the Lucas Oil Late Model Series and the NDRL full season campaign, and if voting started tomorrow, many might give him a good chance to win both and we figure he'll definitely top Jimmy Owens in the NDRL standings no matter what!

Terry Phillips had a disappointing week in Tucson, showing signs of brilliance and suffering heartbreak. But the heartbreak is now past him for the meantime. Phillips held off various charges to take the Sunday night 40 lap $5,000 to win feature at El Paso this weekend. The veteran driver looks primed to make the most of a true outlaw schedule in 2014.

TRI City Speedway (PA) Announcement

When Tri City Speedway in Franklin shut it's doors in the summer of 2011, it continued a trend that made dirt racing fans across western Pennsylvania wonder if the area was too saturated with facilities for the existing amount of cars and fans.

But even with that possibility, Tri City was most likely the one track that if area fans had to choose to bring back from the dead so to speak, save possibly for the former Challenger Raceway, that would top the "bring back" list, and there had been rumors circulating for months about a possible re-opening.

For diehard Tri City fans, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel as a potential new ownership group plans to re open the facility in 2014 and has apparently scheduled 5 Sunday night special programs including Sprints, Big Block Modifieds, Stocks, and Fastrak Late Models. We can't speak for the group, or to the likelihood that this is actually going to happen. Officially only PLANS to purchase and operate the facility are in place, and there is some doubt among skeptics about the seriousness or capability of the Thomas Group, the organization which has stepped forward to re kindle the Tri City flame.

All we can say at this time is to look forward with guarded optimism and continue the hope and stay tuned for more official announcements. In the meantime here is a  statement and a video explaining the plans and facility acquisition process from a video conference held last Friday.

Statement from the Thomas Organization:

"Hello ladies and gentlemen.

My name is Mike Thomas.  On behalf of the Thomas Organization, I am thrilled to announce our plans to acquire Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, Pennsylvania.

This facility is a very special place.  With a heritage that begins more than 50 years ago, it has played host to many thrilling racing events and hotly-contested battles.  It has even tested the nerve of NASCAR drivers including Jeff Gordon and Dave Blaney.

Even though a product of such tradition, Tri-City Speedway has fallen victim to the challenges of modern times.   What has not been lost, however, is its legendary high-banked turns, its impressive speed, and its first-class guest accommodations.

The Thomas Organization is excited to become part of this story.  We believe that innovation and passion will allow the track to soar to heights only it can achieve.  To accomplish this task, we will dedicate our time, talents, and resources to breathing new life into the facility.    When this process is complete, it will be refreshed, restored to first-class condition, and will reopen in May 2014 as Allegheny Motor Speedway.

There are two primary goals at A.M.S.:

To provide an fantastic experience for our guests that includes the best dirt track racing program, clean & modern facilities, and family-friendly entertainment including concerts, fireworks, contests, and other fun events

and

To provide race teams with a first-class racing surface, excellent hospitality, and healthy cash awards so that they may continue to pursue their own respective passion built on speed and competition

In the coming weeks we will announce our 2014 schedule.  Its main highlight will be the Sizzlin’ Summer Series, which is a 5-night event to be held on Sundays that will feature drivers from the All-Star Circuit of Champion 410 Sprint Cars, the BRP Big Block Modified Tour, the FASTRAK Late Models Tour, and the emerging Penn-Ohio Pro Stock Championship Series.  These drivers will compete for the area’s largest purse of prizes and cash, ultimately crowning the “King of the Summer” in September.

The Sizzlin’ Summer Series raises the bar on dirt track racing.  Fans will not be able to watch a racing program of this caliber anywhere within 400 miles of Allegheny Motor Speedway.  Not only do we want to reward loyal race fans with the best possible racing action, we want to introduce a new generation of fans to the excitement and entertainment of dirt track racing.  It will be an experience unlike any other.

As we embark on this project, I am humbly asking each of you to support Allegheny Motor Speedway and its potential impact on our local racing circuit.  Our company is willing to take this tremendous risk because we believe A.M.S. has the potential to be a first-class entertainment venue.  On a personal level I am very excited to work tirelessly to bring each of you, fans and drivers alike, a world-class dirt track racing facility and program.  We have many surprises in store for you.

So, as winter labors on for a few more months, think of the upcoming sizzlin’ summer nights, the smell of the track, and the thrill of watching the country’s best drivers tackle the bad-fast high-banks of Allegheny Motor Speedway.  For now I wish you health and good fortune and look forward to welcoming you to A.M.S. in May 2014."

Alright folks, have a great week and remember, Florida in February is just a few short days away!

Things we learned from Tucson portion of the Winter Extreme

The first serious taste of DIRT came and went quicker than most fans wanted this past week at Tucson International Speedway where the NDRL's Winter Extreme played to the tune of an average of 53 cars a night and six different winners.

It can be difficult to glean much in the way of meaningful performances from the results this early in the season. Different drivers were experimenting with different setups on both tacky and dry slick track conditions all week. Some were there to win, some were there to learn, some were there to experiment, some were there to party and have a great time and most did a little of all of those.

But we did come away with a few observations, as many as we could from all the action occurring at one facility.

Things We Learned From the Winter Extreme

  • Mr. Moyer Sr and Jr took very little time in getting their new Longhorn chassis to the front of the field. Both secured wins early on in the action and Mr Smooth was one of only three drivers to make every show.  There were lingering questions about Moyer Sr's health this offseason part of which stemmed from injuries sustained at the World Finals in November, but those were put to rest. The man looks on top of his game and ready to add to his legacy in 2014.  Moyer Jr looked very good most of the week, but not quite as consistent, perhaps there was some testing factoring into the equation, but he'll certainly be a driver you'll want to keep an eye on in the coming season.

  • Jimmy Mars was probably the most consistent driver this week. Mars put his car into the top 10 virtually all week and took one of the $5000 to win features on Saturday Jan 18th. His 2013 may have been one he'd like to have forgotten, but his 2014 stock may be on the rise. We'll know more in Florida.

  • If there were ever any doubt about how quickly Ryan Gustin could elevate his performance to consistent top 5's against stout competition, he answered them this week, taking home the grand prize of $10,000 on Sunday night wile garnering a week high $13,450 (feature earnings) among the field of nearly 60 cars. He missed only one show and had 3 top 5's total. Is there a more intriguing driver to keep track of in 2014?

  • NDRL rookie of the year candidates Max Blair and Mason Ziegler took some lumps this week, but they also learned a lot. Blair got better as the week progressed and Ziegler didn't go home empty handed, but perhaps the setup advice they learned and the tendencies of other drivers that they encountered will be lessons that will pay off come the dog days of summer. The potential upside is certainly there with both of them and they each flashed a little brilliance during the week.  William Thomas however, had a week that he'd like to forget, failing to make any of the six shows in Tucson. He switched power plants early in the week to no avail, and his late 2013 success and his 2014 Ice Bowl win didn't exactly translate to good showings this week. But most fans would tell you that we've not yet seen the best from him yet so far.
  • Before the week began how many diehard super late model fans had even heard the names RC Whitwell or Tony Jackson Jr, Tony Toste, or Justin Asplin or Jason Krohn?  Whitwell took home a nice chunk of cash and a feature win while the rest of the names mentioned either qualified for multiple shows or even took top 5's. An event is only as strong as the level of the talent you're not quite familiar with, and these guys at time gave the bigger names all they could handle and then some!

  • Chris Simpson, Terry Phillips, and Shane Clanton had up and down weeks but couldn't manage a win. Nobody drives that long a haul to not win, but perhaps there was some test and tune logic going on this week for them.  Although, all of them at some point of the week looked primed to snag a podium finish which Clanton actually did on the last night.

  • Lastly, we learned how much we missed announcer Rick Eshelman. His voice had been out of the national spotlight since his retirement as the announcer of the World of Outlaws Late Models and it had been sorely missed! Rick, we're glad you're back, sincerely, All of DIRT Nation!

And now it's off to El Paso for the NDRL Late Models as they conclude their January action! Here's betting that there'll be a lot more to learn. Stay tuned!

This Week in DIRT: Clauson Captures Golden Driller; Gustin, Mars and Moyer on top in Tucson;WoO Sprints Announce Schedule Additions;

Finally, we have some races to talk about! The dirt preseason went into action this week with an established crown jewel of racing and an up and coming week of Super Late Model action in Tucson, AZ. So most of us have had the dirt racing addiction teased, only to have it come back in full force and anticipation in the weeks leading up to "Florida in February!" (get used to seeing that particular expression, it'll make your twitter following much easier!)

We're pretty sure most of you die hard DIRT fanatics know some of the results this week, and we hope most of you watched the action whether it came via Pay Per View from Racinboys or DirtonDirt.com, or whether you were able to watch for free on MAVTV!

But....if you had your power shut off due to failure to pay because you invested your paycheck in pleasurable company or alcohol, don't worry we're going to get you back up to date because it's time for ...................THIS WEEK IN DIRT!

Clauson Captures Golden Driller.

Bryan Clauson held of 4 time defending Chili Bowl champion Kevin Swindell in the remaining laps to clinch his first of what could be many Golden Drillers Saturday night. The Indiana native bested a field of over 280 cars and took home $10,000 for his efforts in addition to the unique trophy that accompanies the victory. We can imagine him on a date explaining "I've got a golden driller ya know." to some lady and also imagine her saying "show me" right back! He'll be able to do so now! Congrats Bryan!

A Feature (55 Laps): 1. 63-Bryan Clauson[3]; 2. 39-Kevin Swindell[14]; 3. 97-Christopher Bell[2]; 4. 77-Alex Bright[12]; 5. 17R-Dave Darland[10]; 6. 47X-Tim McCreadie[8]; 7. 21-Daryn Pittman[17]; 8. 8J-Jonathan Beason[4]; 9. 3-Chris Windom[9]; 10. 15X-Chad Boat[18]; 11. 67K-Rico Abreu[13]; 12. 24-Tracy Hines[22]; 13. 5D-Zach Daum[5]; 14. 1-Sammy Swindell[6]; 15. 05-Brad Loyet[20]; 16. (DNF) 7M-Kevin Ramey[24]; 17. (DNF) 17K-Alex Schutte[19]; 18. (DNF) 5-Jerry Coons Jr[21]; 19. (DNF) 7C-Caleb Armstrong[1]; 20. (DNF) 63NZ-Michael Pickens[11]; 21. (DNF) 56L-Danny Stratton[16]; 22. Lap Leader(s): Caleb Armstrong (1-5), Clauson (6-55)

We wouldn't be doing our jobs here at The DIRT Network without showing this highlight. On Saturday night in Tulsa, Shane "the throttle" Cottle didn't take kindly to some contact in the later stages of his Bmain, tangling with Brad Kuhn. Western PA Sprint Car driver Brandon Matus captured the action..

Gustin, Mars, and Moyer on Top in Tucson

Modified superstar turned late model star in the making, Ryan Gustin took home the $10,000 grand prize in the NDRL's Winter Extreme in Tucson, AZ on Sunday night. While wily veterans Billy Moyer and Jimmy Mars remained consistent players in the mix all week long. This was quite an accomplishment because of the 56 cars in attendance during the 6 race speedweek, only a small handful actually made every race, speaking to the level of competition this event is starting to attract.

World Of Outlaws Announce Schedule Additions

The World Outlaws will be visiting some familiar places in 2014 for the first time since many of you have been able chew solid food!

The Premier sprint circuit will be making trips to two legendary tracks this year with newly announced stops at Pennsylvania's Port Royal Speedway on October 25th, and also at big block modified crazy Fulton Speedway in New York on July 23rd which is a high banked facility that should provide some great speed and thrilling action!

These shows promise to be intense and the Port Royal show in particular could play a major role in determining the 2014 series champion. If you're in these areas...get your tickets! (that's an order!)

Have a great week everyone! Stay DIRTY

Tuesday night's Chili Bowl Nationals driver's roster (68 Drivers)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals

Entering its 28th straight season, the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals has undoubtedly become a fan-favorite across the country. Unlike many large events that reach their peak after a few years and then begin to regress, the Chili Bowl has maintained a growth that is evident in its storied history. This year is no different as the number of entries has topped 290 cars. The record high coming into this year’s edition is 286 drivers, but the number of entrants this week could match that amount and then some. The Chili Bowl has also become a worldwide attraction, with drivers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and United States partaking in the action.

This year’s show will arguably feature the strongest field to date, with the likes of Kasey Kahne, Rickey Stenhouse, Jr., Jac Haudenschild, Sammy Swindell, Kevin Swindell, Daryn Pittman, Dave Darland, Kyle Larson, Dave Darland, Christopher Bell, Bryan Clauson, Joey Saldana, Tim McCreadie, Brady Bacon, J.J. Yeley, Johnny Herrera, and a slew of others big names all partaking in the fun.

History: Rich Vogler was crowned the first Chili Bowl Nationals champion way back in 1987. Since then, 16 other drivers have claimed the coveted “Golden Driller” including guys like Tony Stewart, Dave Blaney, and Sammy Swindell. Sammy and son Kevin Swindell have dominated the event in recent years. The two of them have collected 9 of the previous 25 Chili Bowl championships, including 5 in a row with Kevin winning the previous four and Sammy winning the one preceding those. The side-by-side racing, rich history and tradition of the Chili Bowl easily makes it one of the most coveted races around the world.
