Dave and Dale Blaney run 1 and 2 in their Fathers' Race, King Jr Continues Hot Summer

On a night that started with a touching tribute by Kate Blaney to her late husband, it was their son's who would battle for a win in the sprint car portion of the sixth annual Lou Blaney Memorial at Sharon Speedway.

The older son Dave took the lead on lap five and didn't look back, even through a couple of late race restarts, to hold off his brother and win the event for the first time.

"It feels pretty good to win this race," Dave Blaney said in victory lane. Then he joked "I guess it took bringing Dale a second car to run to win it."

Caleb Griffith and Caleb Helms brought the field of 21 sprint cars to the start of the 30 lap A Main and it was the outside pole sitter Helms that got out front first. Dave, who started third, quickly got around Griffith to move into the runner up spot. By lap four Helms already caught the back of the field and had to start maneuvering in lapped traffic. It didn't take long for Dave to catch Helms and get by him.

From there the Buckeye Bullet deftly sliced through the lapped cars to build a nice cushion while Griffith got around Helms to take second on lap nine. Three laps later six starting Dale also passed Helms and take third.

The caution flew for the first time on lap 15 when CJ Jones spun in turn four. At the same time Jared Zimbardi stopped at the beginning of the backstretch. The 35z was towed to the pits ending Zimbardi's night.

On the restart Dale got around Griffith. The race was on then between the nearly identical (Dave's being the 98h) Global Oil and Gas Services sprinters. They battled while working through the back of the field until Jason Dollick slowed on lap 18.

With a clean racetrack ahead of him Dave pulled away on the restart and just as he would have to deal with the back of the field again early race leader Helms's car came to a stop on lap 26. Dave didn't have any trouble on the final restart and made it six different winners in six events.

"Honestly I am glad that Dave got one before I did," Dale said. "It was special to run one, two. The whole day is special. It is fun to see all the people (his dad) raced with and talk with them."

After the race Dave posed with fans in the victory lane behind the grandstands for over a half hour.

Griffith ended up third followed by fast qualifier Lee Jacobs and Rod George. Jacobs, Brandon Matus and Adam Kekich took the heat races.

In the BRP modified event Lonnie Riggs and Rex King Jr shared the front row in a stout field of cars. King took the top spot right off the bat and pulled out to a comfortable lead. Third starting Dave Murdick got by Riggs to take the runner up spot on lap five and Jimmy Weller III moved by Riggs into third on lap seven.

They would remain in that order until lap 14 when Jeremiah Shingledecker, who had moved into fourth, made contact with a lapped car and hit one of the tractor tires guarding the inside of the track. This sent the tractor tire rolling down the backstretch and brought out a yellow.

After that tire was put back into place King led the field back to green and pulled away again. This time though the lapped traffic became thick and tough for King to get through.

"The car was real good out of the gate," King said. "The track had a good cushion you could bounce off of and keep your car straight to keep the momentum up. Around lap 25 I found the rubber on the bottom and there were lapped cars running both the top and bottom."

This allowed Murdick and Jim Weller, Jr, who passed his son to get to third, to close in. They briefly went three wide for the lead in turn three, but Shayne Pierce slowed to a stop and the yellow flag flew.

Murdick would try to mount a charge on the restart but the driver of the 165 would not be denied his first Lou Blaney Memorial trophy. There has not been a repeat winner in the modified portion of the event either.

For the current Lernerville, Sharon and BRP points leader the amazing season continues.

"Last year we had six wins and I never thought it would get any better than that," King said. "Now we're at eight this year so it's been really good."

Last year's winner Murdick would have to settle for the runner up spot while Weller, Jr, Weller III, and Brian Swartzlander completed the top five. Murdick, Weller, Jr and Swartzlander won the heats while Kyle Fink picked up the BMain. Over 30 modifieds were on hand for the event.

A crowd that showed up in droves despite rain falling all around the area during the day (except at the speedway) were treated to a nice evening of racing and were able to bid on all kinds of memorabilia with the proceeds going to the Alzheimer's Association.

Sharon will return to weekly racing this Saturday with the Bill Kirila Memorial. The BRP will be back in action on August 10th at Mercer Raceway Park.

Western Pennsylvania Super Late Model Power Poll: Week 13

Hey kids, back to the regular night for the weekly update to the weekly su[per late model rankings for Western PA.

This week, Lenerville, Bedford, Dog Hollow, AMP and Marion Center got their scoring shows in. PPMS, Roaring Knob and Eriez all rained out.

I could only find the top three from Marion Center, so one driver got jobbed out of two points for finishing fourth and another lost one for finishing fifth. If anybody knows who finished in those spots, please let me know and I'll update my spreadsheet and it'll be reflected in next week's totals.

Anyways, lets get to the rankings. Been a little shake up this week...

1. Mike Blose, 53 points. For the first time since early May, we have a new leader. Mike has been heating up lately and this weekend was even more evidence of that. He won Friday night at Dog Hollow and backed it up with a win Saturday at America's Motorsports Park.

2. Alex Ferree, 49 points. Alex falls out of the top spot, but doesn't fall far. He only ran Lernerville this week, where he came home third.

3. Duane Stiner, 40 points. Duane finished third at Dog Hollow Friday to score some points, but it wasn't enough to move up in the rankings. In other weekend action, he finished an uncharacteristic eleventh at AMP.

4. Clate Copeman, 38 points. Clate ran second at Dog Hollow Friday night to pick up his points for the week. I am unsure if he ran anywhere else this weekend, because he sometimes runs Marion Center. I can't find any full results for there this week, though.

 5. Rob Blair, 32 points. Rob didn't score any points this week. He did run a disappointing ninth at Stateline Saturday night, though.

6. Max Blair, 31 points. Max didn't score any points this week either. He did end up doing much better than his dad up at Stateline Saturday night, though, soming home with the win.

6. Luke Hoffner, 31 points. Luke didn't score any points this week either. Only place I saw his name in results this week was AMP, where he came home twelfth, which is way worse than he's used to finishing at AMP.

7. Doug Glessner, 30 points. Doug only scored points at one track this weekend, Marion Center, but he came home with the win.

8. Shawn Claar, 22 points. Shawn didn't score any points this week. The only place I saw his name in results was Bedford where he came home fourteenth.

9. Dewayne Taneyhill, 20 points. Dewayne scored his only points of the weekend at Dog Hollow Friday, where he finished fourth. In other weekend action, he came home ninth at AMP.

And that's it for this week folks. See yinz jags again next week.

Jacobs, McPherson Win Thrillers, Pegher gets Second Win, and King Jr Extends Points Lead at Lernerville

On a pristine night at the Sarver oval fans were treated to great racing all around and the event moved quickly taking just under three hours. A surprise entrant won in the sprints, and a photo finish occurred in the sportsman class. A driver won on his sponsor's night in the late models and the current modified points leader found victory lane too.

Pegher's 1C Late Model (Pat Miller Photo)

The late model feature kicked things off and it was Mike Pegher who jumped out to the early lead.

A couple of early spins by Herman Bertolini and  Dan Swartzlander brought out yellows. They didn't slow down Pegher for long though as he pulled out to nice a nice advantage both times.

While Pegher was comfortably out in front the battle for second raged on behind him between Kenny Schaltenbrand, Russ King, and John Garvin. King and Garvin both would eventually get by Schaltenbrand and tried to chase down Pegher.

When the top three started getting into lapped traffic Alex Ferree, who started deep in the field, entered the mix and got by Garvin. A flat tire for King ended his hopes of finding victory lane and brought out a yellow. King made repairs and got back out on the track.

When the field restarted Ferree lined up beside Pegher but he couldn't do anything with the driver of the Number 1 Cochran car as Pegher pulled away to get his second win of the season.

Pegher got the victory on his sponsor Bolea Oil's night.

"I don't know if Lynn (Geisler) ever got a win on their night or not, but it was great to do that tonight," Pegher said. "It is hard to gain on something when you run once a week, but when we ran the Firecracker three straight nights it helped us out a lot here."

Garvin got around Ferree to get second, while Garrett Krummert came home fourth and Schaltenbrand rounded out the top five.

In the modified race points leader Rex King, Jr took the top spot from the outside pole and didn't look back leading from start to finish to get the win.

While King, Jr was on cruise control Jeremiah Shingledecker, Brian Swartzlander and Dave Murdick had a spirited battle for second and Swartzlander was able to slide by the driver of the 37md to take the runner up spot. Right after that pass something went amiss in Shingledecker's car and a puff of smoke came out the back. He abruptly came to a stop ending his night.

King Jr pulled away once again on the restart proving to be the class of the field. Swartzlander settled for second followed by Murdick, Rex King, Sr and Steve Feder.

In heat race action a scary barrel roll by Ralph McBride in turn one brought out a red flag. Thankfully McBride was alright.

Lee Jacobs Got his Second Lernerville Win (Pat Miller Photo)

Things got off to a slow start in the sprint portion as three cautions fell before a lap was completed in the race including one for sprint rookie AJ Flick who made a miraculous save after being forced off the back stretch. He was able to keep his mount under control and drove back up onto the speedway.

Once the field finally got going it was Carl Bowser who shot to the lead and didn't look back early on. Meanwhile surprise invader Lee Jacobs, who started mid pack, methodically maneuvered through the field and by lap six worked his way into third when Billy Dietrich slowed to bring out a yellow.

On the restart Bowser pulled away again and Jacobs worked his way around pole sitter Dan Kuriger to take second. By the time he got around the 08 sprinter Bowser had built up a straightaway lead.

Jacobs would slowly but surely eat away at the lead and once they got into lap traffic he started to turn the heat up on Bowser.

"I saw the flagman put his wave five fingers at us and I was like I gotta make something happen," Jacobs said. "Carl is so good here especially when the track is like it was tonight so it is pretty special to beat him here."

He put a bold slide job on Bowser coming out of turn two and it stuck giving the driver of the Simcox Grinding 81 the lead. From there he would pull away and almost lapped Ed Lynch, Jr who finished fifth by the time he crossed the checkered flag to get the win.

For Jacobs the dream season continues as he gets his second win at Lernerville backing up the All Stars victory from earlier this year.

"I would've been happy with one win this year with how we'd been running the last couple of years," Jacobs said. "We built a new car and we wanted to bring it to a place where the old car was good at. Hopefully we can get another win tomorrow night at Mercer."

Eric Williams finished third followed by Kuriger and Lynch.

In the stock car feature a three car battle broke out between Rob Shook, Aaron Easler and Corey McPherson. Shook was hooked up on the bottom as he tried to fend off the challenge from Easler, who pulled even with him several times riding around the cushion. McPherson followed the tracks of the number 11 of Easler around the high side and you could throw a blanket over them when a late race yellow slowed the field.

On the restart McPherson got around Easler and set his sights on Shook. The pilot of the 64 machine held his line around bottom and held a narrow lead as they crossed the white flag. The two drag raced down the back stretch and McPherson rocketed around the cushion in three and four. He slapped the wall coming off of four sending sparks in the air but he held his foot on the gas and edged out Shook at the stripe to take the win.

Sportsman points leader Jim Fosnaught took third, followed by Easler and Mike Miller.

Western Pennsylvania Super Late Model Power Poll: Week 12

Hey there peeps. It's day late this week, because I had a previous engagement last night, but the rankings have been updated this week.

This week was a tricky one. If tricky meant, well, almost nobody scored any points. The only tracks that got scoring shows in were Dog Hollow and Eriez.

Friday, Lernerville had a special and didn't score points for these rankings, and Bedford had a scheduled night off as the Bedford County Fair was getting set up over the weekend.

All of the Saturday night scoring tracks rained out. Saturday was nasty, though, so that shouldn't be of any surprise to anybody.

All of that meant that there was minimal movement amongst this poll. It's pretty much exactly the same as last week, except for a couple drivers who manged to move up a spot or two.

That said, let's get to some rankings...

1. Alex Ferree, 46 points. Alex didn't score any points this week. Even if PPMS managed to get their show in, he still wouldn't have scored any points. They had a special scheduled too. He did run the Elite 8 show at Lernerville Friday, and came home third in what was a pretty amazing race.

2. Mike Blose, 43 points. Mike closed the gap on Alex with a second at Dog Hollow on Friday He seemed to get off to a pretty slow start this year, but he's definitely heating up.

3. Duane Stiner, 37 points. Duane didn't score any points this week either. He did run Dog Hollow on Friday though, coming home seventh.

4. Clate Copeman, 34 points. Clate picked up a couple points this week with a fourth Friday at Dog Hollow.

5. Rob Blair, 32 points. Rob jumps up one spot on the back of a third place finish at Eriez Sunday.

6. Max Blair, 31 points. Max also jumps up spot on these rankings but stays one spot behind him, even though he won Sunday night at Eriez. In other weekend action, he raced Friday at Lernerville, coming home a disappointing 15th.

6. Luke Hoffner, 31 points. Luke didn't score any points this week. He did run third at Clinton County Friday though.

7. Doug Glessner, 25 points. Doug didn't score any points this week. I didn't see his name in the results anywhere else either. Them weekends off do a race team good sometimes.

8. Shawn Claar, 22 points. Shawn scored  single point this week, coming home fifth at Dog Hollow Friday night.

9. Derrick Rodkey, Ron Delano, Dewayne Taneyhill, and Russ King are all still tied with 18 points. The only one of the four I saw in any results this weekend was Taneyhill, and he finished just outside of a scoring position in sixth at Dog Hollow Friday.

So that's it for this week kids. See yinz jags back on the traditional Monday night next week.

Winged 410 Sprint Car Rankings - Volume III

For my first order of business, I'd like to apologize for time gap between volumes II and III. My intent was originally to update my rankings bi-weekly. However, two months have passed since my last release. That's life though, right? How often do things go exactly as planned?

Now let's get down to the important matter at hand. I've ranked the top eight winged 410 cubic in. sprint car drivers based on varying categories. Only races since the last edition (May 22nd) are considered. Obvious variables are also factored in, such as strength of field, amount of races run, highs & lows, etc. As always, I'll do my best to keep my personal bias out of the situation. So without further adieu, here is the newest edition of "Winged 410 Sprint Car Rankings".

1. Donny Schatz

The five-time World of Outlaws champion may very well be en route to his 6th series title, and he finds himself atop the list of sprint car drivers on the current scene. Since we've last ranked the drivers (May 22nd), Schatz has regained the WoO points lead from fellow competitor and defending series champion Daryn Pittman. The Tony Stewart Racing #15 machine has scored 6 wins since late May, captured the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup, and tallied a number of runner-up finishes and hard-charger awards. Completing all of this while running with the best drivers in the world night in and night out, leaves no question that Donny Schatz is currently the best winged 410 sprint car driver.

2. Daryn Pittman

Coming in at a close 2nd is the aforementioned defending World of Outlaws Champion. Pittman let the points lead fall into the hands of Schatz but has stayed within striking distance for the time being. Pittman still leads series with an impressive 10 wins, three of those coming since May 22nd.

3. Kerry Madsen

Having what could arguably be the best year of his career to date, Madsen has been impressive thus far. Landing himself at no. 3 in the rankings, King Kerry has been masterful. Madsen currently sits at 5th in the WoO standings, but has been the hottest driver on the tour over the last few weeks. He owns two wins since the 22nd of May, one being a little race at some dirt track in Ohio that paid $50,000 to the winner.

4. Dale Blaney

The Low Rider clocks in at 4th on the list for number of reasons...actually, there are probably too many to list. For starters, his domination of Ohio Speedweek is unfathomable. Over a six race span with the All Star Sprints, Blaney collected four wins and two additional podium finishes. He is the current ASCoC points leader, and he picked up a WoO win at Attica on May 30th. He also had strong charges to the front at the King's Royal and Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup.

5. Paul McMahan

"The Quiet Man" rounds out the top 5 based on his consistency to run up front with the premier dirt sprint car series in the world. Although he did capture the hallowed Doty Classic at Limaland earlier this month, finding victory lane a few more times would surely boost him up a few spots in our rankings. Paul McMahan and the CJB Motorsports #51 sit 3rd in the WoO points standings and are still within striking distance of Schatz and Pittman.

6. Justin Henderson

If there was to be a wild card in my rankings, it would have to be Justin Henderson. He has proven time and again that he can get the job done in many different cars. The only knock against Henderson of late is that his weekly track, Knoxville, has only raced three times since our last ranking. In those races Henderson has a 1st and 2nd place finish against the toughest weekly competition in the country, as well as a respectable 16th place finish against the World of Outlaws.

7. Lucas Wolfe

It appears that the former World of Outlaws regular has found a match made in heaven. His pairing with the Zemaitis owned #1z has already brought success. Lucas and company didn't even run one of the PA Speedweek shows and he was still able to capture the mini-series championship over fan-favorite Greg Hodnett. Along with the title came one Speedweek win. Wolfe also had very strong runs last weekend when the WoO visited Williams Grove Speedway for the 3rd and 4th times this season.

8. Greg Hodnett

As mentioned above, Hodnett is a fan favorite and he continues to find success as time goes on. Hodnett and the Heffner Racing #27 team managed a 2nd place finish in the PA Speedweek points chase. Last Friday night he beat the stout field of World of Outlaws competitors at Williams Grove to claim opening night of the Summer Nationals. Additionally, Hodnett continues to lead the Williams Grove points chase as we head into the latter months of summer.

Thanks for reading! As always, I encourage you to leave any comments regarding your opinion or suggestions that you may have for me.

The Dominator Takes 1st TDN Driver of Week Award; Deweese; Fuller and Zeigler round out honorable mentions

Rick Schwallie Photo

And this week's winner of our prestigious Driver of the Week Award goes to a man who needs no introduction. So that being the case, we can skip right to the meat of the matter.  Late model legend Scott Bloomquist took apart a stout 54 car field at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, NE in 80 laps to collect the $30,000 winner's share of the purse at this years Silver Dollar Nationals.

The dirttrax dominator had been having a rough go of it in the win column this past month, posting several second place finishes. However, Bloomquist put an exclamation point on this particular performance, leading from green flag to checkers against Lucas tour regulars Don "the real deal/bend your steal" O'Neal and The "Ohhhhhh..Show" Jimmy Owens and the likes of Brian Birkhofer, Billy Moyer and Jason Feger.

Congrats Mr. Bloomquist on the first of what we're sure will be many TDN Driver of the Week Awards!

Honorable Mentions:

Lance Dewease:

The central PA sprint car veteran beat the Outlaws and the rain at Williams Grove Saturday to pocket $20,000 in the World of Outlaw Summer Nationals.  Dewease held off points leader Donny Schatz for the better part of 30 laps, winning from the pole as the wee hours of Sunday morning took over. The win was significant for Dewease who racked up his 300th career victory in the process

Tim Fuller:
It's been a rough year for Tim Fuller who's had to overcome a great deal of adversity the last few years. Signing on as one of the original full time NDRL drivers over the winter, Fuller looked as if he'd found a home. Until the series came crashing down mid season, leaving a big mess in it's wake including tracks and drivers. But Fuller kept his head up and stayed focused. He's rejoined the World of Outlaw Late Models for the rest of the tour, and has already posted solid finishes on this year's Wild West Tour portion. And Friday night, he was rewarded with a win  at River Cities Speedway in a tour race that has seen Darrell Lanigan dominate the majority of the races, Fuller was tops of the field on Friday night and it points to a return to his late 2009 form when he was one of the hottest late model drivers around. We're not saying that'll happen again just like that, but it's great to have a well respected, honest, hardworking Tim Fuller back in the competitive mix for the rest of 2014.

Mason Ziegler:
The DIRT jiggler Mason Zeigler liked winning so nice that he did it twice this weekend as the UMP Summernationals Hell Tour wrapped up at Brushcreek Motor Sports Park July 17th and Attica July 18th. Zeigler became the second Pennsylvanian to win a race on the Hell Tour this season.  To most knowledgeable fans, this sort of breakout was a question of not if but when, and it was answered with Zeigler's performance over the two days. Congrats Mr. Zeigler!

Miley Jets Past Field to win $3,000 and Michael, Jr Bests Renegades at Lernerville

Elite Eight Late Model Winner Jared Miley
A lightning fast racing surface provided great action Friday night at Lernerville for the Elite Eight Late Models, Renegades of Dirt, Sportsmans, and Sportsman Modifeds.

Fans were treated to an exciting 30 lap late model feature to kick off the night where Jared Miley patiently stalked the 10 car of Alex Ferree before making the winning move on lap 21.

Ferree and John Mollick led the field of 20 cars to green. The front row went to battle from the time the green flag flew both using the cushion and it was Ferree who got the early lead. Mollick would settle in just behind in second while Miley was in third.

A caution for Herman Bertolini and Brian Casey, who spun in turn two and collected Tommy Beck slowed the field on lap four.

On the restart Miley made a move around the top to get by Mollick to get into the runner up spot. Mollick would fade from there and eventually dropped out of the event. Miley was on the bumper of Ferree for the next few laps running about a half a lane below the 10 machine. They would run that way until a caution came out for debris on lap 13.

It was much of the same on the next restart as the top two guys would pull away while Davey Johnson was on the move behind them getting up into the top five. Miley made the move for the lead coming into turn three and nosed ahead of Ferree at the line, Right when Miley took the top spot away Dan Angelichio spun.

Miley would pull away when the field returned to racing and Johnson shot around Ferree for second. Gregg Satterlee, driving the Force 31, hooked the cushion wrong in two and flipped bringing out the red on lap 26. Satterlee was ok.

The H1 would not be stopped as he pulled away again on the final restart to pick up the $3,000 payday. Johnson was second, followed by Ferree, Mike Pegher, Jr and John Garvin.

The Renegades of Dirt made their debut next in the program. Twenty drivers representing seven states took the green and it was Tyler Nicely who took the initial lead. He would only keep the lead momentarily because he spun sideways coming off of turn two relinquishing the lead to Jacob Hawkins. Nicely saved his ump modified, but lost numerous spots on the track.

The spin bunched up the rest of the field giving Hawkins a nice advantage on the field. Rich Michael, Jr emerged from the melee in second place and went to work to try and catch Hawkins.

Hawkins was up on the cushion while Michael preferred the bottom line and slowly reeled in the 13 mod.
Michael caught him on lap 10 and Hawkins moved down to try and hold off the 17x. It didn't work though and Michael made the winning pass on lap 11. He would go on to pull away and take the non-stop main.

Hawkins ended up second, followed by Chris Basich, Steve Dixon and Evan Taylor.

The Sportsman class was next and Joe Kelley took the early lead from the pole . He would lead Terry Young for the first three laps until a caution for Rob Shook, who got a flat tire and spun, slowed the field.

Kelley regained control on the restart and held a comfortable lead while Jim Fosnaught was making moves behind him. Fosnaught methodically worked the bottom and moved his 20j car up to third from his 12th starting spot by lap seven when the yellow came out for Collin Burke.

When they went back to green Fosnaught moved into second and started to put the pressure on Kelley. The current Lernerville points leader came close to passing Kelley, but a yellow for Eric Piotrowski kept Kelley in the lead.

When the field resumed Kelley, who had been running the top, moved down to try and take Fosnaught's line away, but he slipped up the track and that was all it took as Fosnaught made the winning pass on lap 14.

Fosnaught cruised from there to take his fourth checkered flag of the 2014 Lernerville season.

Kelley settled for second and was followed across the line by Aaron Easler, Young and Pat Hanley.

Adam Hilton took the lead from third on the opening lap and cruised to victory in the Sportsman Modifieds to cap off the night. It was Hilton's second win on the season in his third trip to the Sarver speedway. Rocky Kugel recovered from a lap six spin to finish second.

Schatz wins 5th Silver Cup and Darrah Gets Redemption in the Second A Main

Schatz and Darrah in Victory Lane

By Jerin Steele

Donny Schatz made a lap 15 pass on Paul McMahan and held off Kerry Madsen to win the first A Main of the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Tuesday night.

"Paul changed his line when we were able to get by him," Schatz said beside his Tony Stewart Racing STP backed sprinter. "I kinda had to wait for it to come to me and get in the right spot to get around him."

McMahan and local favorite Ed Lynch, Jr led the field to green and it was McMahan who jumped out to the early advantage. He would pull away early while the Kerry Madsen, Daryn Pittman and Schatz were able to get by Lynch.

A caution slowed the field on lap nine when Shane Stewart spun at the end of the front stretch. By that time Schatz had worked his way around both Madsen and Pittman to move into the second spot.

When the field restarted Schatz went to work on McMahan and got by him briefly on lap 12, but McMahan was able to power back by to maintain the lead momentarily.

The current World of Outlaws points leader made the winning move on lap 15 as he was able to get by the CJB Motorsports 51 car.

"Once I was able to get by him I just tried to play it cool in lapped traffic," Schatz said.

Meanwhile 17th starting Dale Blaney was on the move as he broke into the top five at the mid point of the race. Madsen and Blaney were able to reel in McMahan and both made a pass on him to move up a spot before Cole Duncan and Cody Darrah tangled to bring out a caution on lap 25.

The field returned to green for two laps but was halted when Danny Holtgraver flipped on the front stretch to bring the red flag. Holtgraver was ok, but the safety crew attended to Jack Sodeman, Jr in between turns one and two. He left in the ambulance with an injury and did not start the second feature.

UPDATE: According to Sodeman's Twitter page when Holtgraver flipped his car came inside the cage of his sprinter and broke his leg. We wish Jack a speedy recovery.

The red flag set up a three lap shootout between Schatz and Madsen. Schatz worked the low line and Madsen rocketed around the top, but could not gain any ground on Schatz.

"The surface has always been great here," Schatz said. "When a track slicks off like this you have to drive the car a lot differently. It is a drivers track. You can have the best motor and it really doesn't mean much here."

Madsen settled for second which made it eight straight podiums for the Australian.

Blaney took third followed by McMahan and Pittman.

Second A Main

A year ago it seemed that Cody Darrah was on his way to his first Lernerville win when he suffered a flat tire in the late stages of the race. This time Darrah didn't suffer any ill fates and was able to get the victory.

"We came close here last year and had the flat," Darrah said. "To be able to come here, start on the pole and win means a lot to our guys."

Darrah and current Lernerville points leader Carl Bowser paced the field to green in the second main event.

It was Darrah who took the lead on the start and third starting Danny Dietrich followed him into second place. Dietrich used  the low line and got a good run off of turn two to obtain the top spot early in the event.

Dietrich continued to use the bottom part of the speedway to his liking until he got into lapped traffic and fell back into the clutches of Darrah who got back by him.

The driver of the Sandoe's Fruit Markets backed number 48 lost his brakes midway through the race making it tricky to run on the slicked off Lernerville surface.

"I had a left rear seal over me on in the first feature and in the second one I kinda knew where to be," Dietrich said. "We set up to run the bottom and it worked. We were really fast. I think we had the car to beat until we lost the brakes between lap seven and ten."

Darrah tried the high groove a couple of times and Dietrich would inch closer to him, but the driver of the Kasey Kahne Racing Ollie's Bargain Outlets sprinter prevailed in a non stop main event.

"I had to stay up top to get by Danny, but once I passed him I moved down to run the best line," Darrah said.

For Dietrich it was a great night considering he wasn't planning on coming to Lernerville until late yesterday.

"Cody ran a great race. Congrats to him," Dietrich said. "We came out here looking for some speed going into a big weekend and to run second was a bonus for us."

Tim Shaffer was on the bumper of Dietrich for the runner up spot for the second half of the race, but settled for third.

A seventh place finish in race two secured the overall title for Schatz and tied him for most all time with Mark Kinser at five.

Brad Sweet was the first to take to the track in time trials and his lap held up over the field of 35 cars.

David Gravel, McMahan, Madsen, and Jason Sides won the heat races and Logan Schuchart was able to win a spirited battle with Steve Kinser to take the Last Chance Showdown.

Western Pennylvania Super Late Model Power Poll: Week 11

Hey folks, 'tis Monday evening so that means it's time for the weekly update to my rankings.

This week, All of the scoring tracks had regular shows except for Eriez, who rained out, so that means lots of points were scored this week. I feel bad for the guys who were MCR regulars in these rankings, because they're likely to drop like a rock because they're not going to be scoring points on Saturdays. Most of them do run Eriez on Sundays, but Eriez has had horrific luck with rain this season.

Oh well, lets get to these rankings...

1. Alex Ferree, 46 points. Alex still leads these rankings on the strength of his second place finish at Lernerville Friday night. He had a rare bad night at PPMS, finishing dead last. Didn't really affect this poll at all, though.

2. Mike Blose, 39 points. Mike jumped up to second in these rankings after an especially strong and more Mike Blose like weekend. He won at Dog Hollow Friday and came home third at Marion Center Saturday.

3. Duane Stiner, 37 points. Duane also had a fantastic weekend but drops one spot in these rankings. He ran fifth at Dog Hollow Friday and picked up yet another win at AMP Saturday.

4. Clate Copeman, 32 points. Clate moves down one spot this week. He ran third at Dog Hollow Friday to score some points. I didn't see his name in any results Saturday.

5. Luke Hoffner, 31 points. Luke also moves down one spot this week. He ran second at AMP Saturday to score his points for the week. Poking around at area results, it looks like he ran sixth at Clinton County Friday.

6. Rob Blair, 29 points. Rob didn't score any points this week because the one scoring track he runs, Eriez, rained out. He had a pretty good Saturday night at Stateline, coming home second to...

7. Max Blair, 26 points. Max didn't score any points this weekend either, but he had an extremely good Saturday night at Stateline, winning both the super late model and crate late model features.

8. Doug Glessner, 25 points. Doug scored his points this week at Marion Center, where he ran second. I didn't see his name anywhere on Friday though.

9. Shawn Claar, 21 points. Shawn didn't score any points this week. The only place i saw his name in results was Dog Hollow, where he came home a disappointing sixteenth.

10. Derrick Rodkey came home third at AMP, Dewayne Taneyhill had a fourth at Dog Hollow and  fifth at AMP, Russ King and Ron Delano didn't score any points this week, but all four guys are tied with 18 points.

And that's it for this week. See yous guys next week.

World of Outlaw Sprints Invade Lernerville: It's Silver Cup Time!

The finest sprint cars in the world invade the scene Tuesday July 15 at Lernerville Speedway for the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup.

This is the 23rd running of the event which changed format in 2009 to it's current state, offers twin 30 lap features with a separate bonus to the driver that achieves the best average finish in the two main events.

Aside from the touring members of the World of Outlaws, fans can expect a strong contingent of Ohio and Pennsylvania competitors and a few other stout names currently chasing the annual "Month of Money" in the series schedule which features some of the most lucrative events of the season.

Previous Winners:

2013 - Donny Schatz
2012 - Craig Dollansky
2011 - Tim Shaffer
2010 - Donny Schatz
2009 - Danny Lasoski
2008 - Steve Kinser
2007 - Donny Schatz
2006 - Donny Schatz
2005 - Tim Shaffer
2004 - Sammy Swindell
2003 - Mother Nature
2002 - Ed Lynch, Jr.
2001 - Mark Kinser
2000 - Sammy Swindell
1999 - Mark Kinser
1998 - Mark Kinser
1997 - Mark Kinser
1996 - Mark Kinser
1995 - Stevie Smith
1994 - Steve Kinser
1993 - Jeff Swindell
1992 - Sammy Swindell

Setting the Table:

The Outlaws:

Coming into this one, Donny Schatz has a somewhat comfortable lead over second place driver and last year's WoO champion Daryn Pittman. But the hottest driver in the outlaw stable at this time is Kerry Madsen who's been tough in recent action, and then went to another level this past weekend at Eldora, winning the 31st running of the Kings Royal. King Kerry carries quite a lot of momentum into this one and it'll be interesting to see if he can translate it into success Tuesday night.

Paul McMahan held his own at Eldora this weekend and took the checkered flag at Limaland last week in the Brad Doty Classic. A win in either feature shouldn't surprise anybody. David Gravel appears to be coming out of a slight performance dip and looked impressive with a quick time at Limaland and a strong performance at Eldora where he sat on the pole for the King's Royal.

And last but not least, it will be Steve Kinser's final Silver Cup performance in his illustrious career. There'll be surprise in store for the "King" this Tuesday night. You can read more about it here via Lernerville PR director Eric Westendorf's report. Lernerville Speedway to Salute the King

ASCoC and PA Contenders:

Two names that immediately come to mind are the "Steel City Outlaw" Tim Shaffer and the "Low Rider" Dale Blaney.  Shaffer's won it twice, and came home 2nd in the Knight Before the King's Royal Friday night at Eldora, while Blaney is coming off an almost impossible 4 win Ohio Sprint Speedweek performance that earned driver of the week honors here at TDN.

Danny Holtgraver can't be counted out for a win either, the former Lernerville track champion has had a podium performance in a Silver Cup feature before and knows the place like the back of his hand.  Ed Lynch pulled off the miracle in the 2002 Silver Cup and might just have one more left in him while previous winner Stevie Smith is always tough.

Weather:
Our own weather guru Trever Steele has taken a look into his crystal ball and come up with the following concerning the Silver Cup forecast:

"Decreasing clouds in the afternoon with cool temps. Highs low to mid 70s; evening temps into the low 60s."

The Story From Lernerville; Norris Holds Off Ferree; Swartzlander Takes Care of Business; Fosnaught Scoresl 3rd Win of Season; George Still Has It

The action track was engulfed in a surge of great weather and a great crowd Friday night.  And those in attendance were treated to four feature events more than worthy of the admission price and then some.  Side by side battles for the lead, and charges from the middle of the pack toward the front were the norm in every feature, aided by a track that was neither too tacky for danger or typical full moon behavior, nor so slick that you could see your own reflection on it. And as far as surfaces go, this one might have been the best of the season to this point.

Late Models:
A lighter than normal field of 14 late models took the track Friday night. But when Jared Miley and Russ King brought the field to the green flag, it was far more about quality than quantity.

Especially when the likes of Mike Pegher Jr, Alex Ferree, and John Garvin Jr are not far behind and ready to bear down on the front row starters for 25 laps.  Miley took the early lead, looking strong in doing so while Russ King tangled with the cushion and lost on lap three.

In the catbird seat, was one Michael Norris who surveyed the action from his sixth starting spot and charged forward at a rate of one spot per lap until he moved under Miley for the lead on lap 5.  Ferree made a Norris-like charge himself from his 10th starting spot to third in the first half of the feature as well.  But, a lap 11 melee involving King, Pegher Jr, and Chuck Sarver in turn four reset the scene. Norris was assigned the task of keeping Ferree and Jared Miley at bay for 14 laps with minimal lapped traffic to use for defense, and he did it as well as can be done. The top three spent much of the final moments nose to tail, and Ferree was able to pull to ever so close to Norris in turns two and four but at the end of 25 laps, Norris held on to collect his first Lernerville win of the season and third career victory there.

Top 10:

1. Michael Norris
2. Alex Ferree
3. Jared Miley
4. John Garvin Jr
5. Brian Swartzlander
6. Mike Pegher Jr
7. Gary Lyle
8. Chris Schneider
9. Chuck Sarver
10. Kenny Schaltenbrand

Sprints:

He's still got it! Not that he ever lost it. Rod George had yet to grace the clay at the action track in 2014, but the former track champion still has the skills to pay the bills and they were on display throughout the sprint main event.

George started from the pole and quickly checked out to a four second advantage while his front row mate, Brandon Spithaler drifted back a couple of spots from the drop of the green flag. Mike Lutz moved up to second early on, but was never able to pose a threat to George who looked as if he was in position to win by half a track. Meanwhile, Jack Sodeman Jr was able to make quick work of the four cars in front of him to take second from Lutz just before the halfway point as Spithaler perhaps made an adjustment or found a better way around the track.

Whatever he did, it worked and he worked his way back to second. Following a mid race restart Spithaler was as fast as George and perhaps faster in the final laps. A lap 20 caution for Bill Kiley (right front wheel broke), saw the margin between George and 2nd place Spithaler shrink to .006 seconds at the line.

The two drivers then forged a battle to the finish with Spithaler almost pulling to a dead heat coming out of turn four on some laps, but George kept him at bay using his experience and just enough top side momentum to claim his 44th victory at Lernerville.

Top 10:

1. Rod George
2. Brandon Spithaler
3. Jack Sodeman Jr
4. Brandon Matus
5. Carl Bowser
6. Jared Zimbardi
7. Mike Lutz
8. AJ Flick
9. Billy Dietrich
10. Dan Shetler

Modifieds:
Brian Swartzlander's early season demons have officially been exorcised. His performance Friday night was something to see as he made his way through the field from his second starting spot to second in the first two laps of the main event.

And that's where he found, Rex King Sr waiting to do battle. Swartzlander got around the #65 on the top side on lap six and looked to be in control the rest of the way.

But King Sr wouldn't go away. He and Swartzlander swapped the lead on several occasions in the feature's middle portion while Rex King Jr made a run to third and Tom Winkle kept a strong hold on fourth.

Swartzlander would gain firm control of the feature by moving down low on the surface to go around lapped traffic and once in clean air, he was gone.

"It's been an up and down year" Swartzlander said.  "It's really been a roller coaster, we've had some really good runs and we probably should have a few more wins, but that's racing."

Top 10:
1. Brian Swartzander
2. Rex King Sr
3. Rex King Jr
4. Tom Winkle
5. Dave Murdick
6. Shayne Pierce
7. Jeremiah Shingledecker
8. Justin Wright
9. Bob Warren
10. Tom Glenn

Sportsman:

You might want to keep a more interested eye on one Aaron Easler. He didn't win Friday night, and hasn't won yet this season, but he's proving he can hang with the best of the sportsman stock division, and that's not an easy thing.

Easler led the field to green Friday night and held of former track champion Joe Kelley for the first five laps of the 20 lap main event before finally yielding the lead to the #66 on lap six.

Behind them, Paul Schreckengost and Terry Young swapped the third spot back and forth lap after lap and behind them, Jim Fosnaught had entered the fray. Climbing from his tenth starting position, Fosnaught patiently picked his way though the cars in front of him using all three grooves while shrinking Kelley's lead. After a late race restart, Fosnaught used the bottom to get around Kelly as Easler found his way back around the former leader to take a strong second place while posting the fastest lap time in the main event.

But the night belonged to Fosnaught, who's maturity and patience have really shone through in 2014. It was his third victory of the season.

An emotional Fosnaught spoke in victory lane. "Last year I was very erratic and kind of all over the place, but this year I'm having fun, even when I'm not winning, I'm still having fun."

Top 10:
1. Jim Fosnaught
2. Aaron Easler
3. Joe Kelley
4. Corey McPherson
5. Terry Young
6. Mark Sanders
7. Pat Hanley
8. Rob Shook
9. Colin Burke
10. Joey Zambotti

Mark Dobmeier’s awesome week

If you’re a regular at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, ND, you’ll know that local sprint car Driver Mark Dobmeier, is a very good sprint car driver. In my opinion, he's one of the best in the upper Midwest. When the Senske and Sons, Dahlstrom Motors, Forx Raditor, Lunstra Motorsports number 13 sprint car takes the track at the famed 3/10 mile Bullring, he’s the driver to beat.

Dobmeier has been known to give the nation’s best sprint car drivers a run for their money, too.

Dynamite Dobmeier has three career World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series wins (2006, 2012 and 2014). Also, during the 2011 Knoxville Nationals, he claimed a night two feature win.

This past week, Dobmeier won three 410 sprint car races in three consecutive nights. First, he won the World of Outlaws Sprint car feature at Husets Speed, then followed it up with another win again on Thursday night at Husets Speedway. Friday night, he won at River Cities Speedway. With his three feature wins last week, Dobmeier now has six feature wins this season.

Dobmeier had this to say after he beat Five-Time WoO champion Donny Schatz to win his third  WoO race of his career.

“That cheer right there says it all!” Dobmeier said. “I can’t thank my team enough. They always stick behind us. They always work harder and harder. I’ll tell you what, I gave 110 percent in that race.” “We’ve been very strong at this track. I’d say we’ve been the fastest car out there for the last two weeks. We had a blown motor and I was going for it for the lead last week, just the other night, pulled a wheelie and got in a tangle up. But that’s the fine line of pushing the edge all the time. That could have been the same thing right there but we were able to tame her down and keep her to the win.

Tonight, Dobmeier has his sights set on a Mid-Season Championship at River Cities Speedway. Incidentally, you can watch tonight's races by logging on to SpeedShiftTV.com tonight at 7:30 p.m. CST to watch the NOSA 410. Programing note: Tonight, there will be a double sprint car features.

Pittman in Hot Pursuit; Wolfe, Bell and Satterlee Snag Honorable Mentions

Daryn Pittman finds himself as the recipient of the prestigious TDN "Driver of the Week" award for the second time this season after his outstanding weekend with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series. Pittman's first time atop the standings came after winning four straight with the series during their northeastern swing. This past weekend Pittman doubled up, going 2 for 2, to earn a total of $20,000 in addition to cutting into Donny Schatz's point lead. The KKR #9 team currently leads the World of Outlaws with 9 wins on the year as they work for back-to-back trophies following last year's championship.

Honorable Mentions:

Lucas Wolfe:
The "Kid from Mechanicsburg" got the job done during the grueling Pennsylvania Speedweek as the pilot of the Zemaitis owned #1 machine. Lucas only competed in 7 of the 8 shows and was still able to pull off the Speedweeks title over a handful of guys that entered all eight events. The only race that he was absent from was at Lincoln Speedway when he was off enjoying the birth of his baby girl.

Christopher Bell:
Sometimes known as the "Norman Ninja", this kid has won this season in both winged and nonwinged 410 and 360 sprint, as well as dominating the midget ranks. Bell receives an honorable mention this week for his sweep of both POWRi events at Angell Park Speedway. Bell led a charge of Keith Kunz owned midgets as he and his teammates swept the three podium positions during both nights of racing action. Chris Bell was a previous winner of the TDN "Driver of the Week" award following his first career WoO win.

Gregg Satterlee:
Satterlee has startled to climb off of the struggle bus after having a rough month of racing. After many misfortunes over the course of his runs with the Hell Tour and Firecracker weekend, The Truth climbed out of the whole by winning the $4,000 to win Independence 50 at Dog Hollow Speedway. He followed that up with a dominating win at Winchester (VA) Speedway worth $3,000 over Greg Roberson and Jason Covert. The feats, worth $7,000 total, are enough to earn Satterlee one of our Honorable Mentions of the week.
